Pistia stratiotes
The lettuce shaped leaves are soft & hairy. This plant spreads by sending out runners to form young plants. The fine roots give good cover for small fish. Pistia are not hardy and do best placed in sheltered pools.
Water lettuce is great for adding shade to a pond without shelves.
This is a tropical plant and therefore is not frost hardy. As the leaves turn brown early autumn, remove from pond and add to compost. Replace with new plants the following spring.

Postal orders containing plants despatched on Mondays (Tuesday if bank holiday). Click & Collect plant orders are available for collection the next day.
We have a broader range and more established plants available for purchase at Wayside during shop opening hours. Aquatic soil/compost is only available instore and via Click & Collect due to weight.
